How Do You Get Good at Speaking?

How Do You Get Good at Speaking?

People ask me how did you get good at speaking? How did you become a speaker? What can I do to do it too?

Simple! Three things:

1)   Speak.
2)   Speak about what you know and from the heart.
3)   Watch, read and study other speakers.

That is all I do.

I study quotes till my mind melts. I dissect keynotes on the daily and watch/read what resonates, what offends and what engages. I practice all the time. I majorly mess up at least once a week (from costing my business thousands of dollars, to occasionally offending people in my audience or saying yes to things when I very much know I should have said no).

After the mistakes made, after the wasted money spent and after the shame of accidentally offending someone… I do three things:

1)   I CONTINUE to speak.
2)   I CONTINUE to speak about what I know and from the heart.
3)   I CONTINUE to watch, read and study other speakers.

I make sure I don’t make the same mistakes twice. You can be great at anything as long as you do those three things in the area you are passionate about.

Want to be a good writer?

1)   Write.
2)   Write about what you know and from the heart.
3)   Watch, read and study other writers.

Want to be a great teacher?

1)   Teach.
2)   Teach about what you know and from the heart.
3)   Watch, read and study other teachers.

That is the secret to becoming great in your field.

Like Zig Ziglar said… “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

What separates the winners from the losers are the ones who decide to start walking down the path that leads to their passion.

The winners start walking and keep walking. The winners keep making mistakes. The winners understand they don’t need to know how to do it, they need to know they want to do it and figure it out on the way. When we figure that out, we are on our way to being great.

I knew nothing about speaking a year ago. I learned about speaking by:

1)   Speaking.
2)   Speaking about what I know and from the heart.
3)   Watching, reading and studying other speakers.

That is it. So the next time you here someone say how do I become great at ____(fill in your passion here)____ tell them they can do it. Tell them they can do it as long as they get started. Tell them they need to practice in the areas they are passionate about. Shoot, you can even share this article with them. Just let them know it only takes three things to be great at what you do.

How to Be a Speaker: Start pressing towards your passions and learn as you go. If you want to speak, speak, speak about what you know and from the heart and watch/read/study other speakers everyday and you will quickly learn how to be a speaker!

Question: What would you do if you knew if you couldn’t fail?

A question for you … Why study quotes till your mind melts? What it is about quotes that makes you a better speaker?

What would you do if you knew if you couldn’t fail?
That’s easy. I’d fly around the world in my Superman leotard.

    • Hi Joe, I memorize quotes in order to help more people. Sometimes it is helpful for people to hear from great leaders, musicians, artists, speakers or politicians and to answer audience questions with reminding them about a quote. I believe it can help resonate with audience members therefore it helps you be a better speaker. Thank you for your comment.
